Dandruff Treatment Options Part 1
Most of us will probably testify to having experienced this about dandruff – once you have that irritating, embarrassing, itchy, flaky condition, it seems never to go away. You can use a dandruff treatment such as an over the counter or medicated shampoo, the flaking and itching will remain in control until such time as you continue to use the medicated product. However as soon as you stop using it, the dandruff seems to come back; and with a vengeance, at that!
Does that mean that there is no real dandruff cure then? Well the answer to that could be Yes and No. While you can effectively keep dandruff under control, in most cases there is no way to completely eradicate dandruff. Even those formulations that claim to offer a definite dandruff cure, don’t really do the job. Depending upon the kind of dandruff you have, the following dandruff treatments can be used –
Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxyl acid keratinolytic agent that is typically found in medicated talcum powders and so on to act as an antifungal agent. There are anti dandruff formulations that contain salicylic acid as well, which could be useful as dandruff treatment.
Zinc pyrithione or ZPT is a chemical commonly added to shampoos that claim to offer a dandruff cure. This is an antifungal and anti bacterial agent that helps keep flaking and itching under control and is also known to keep sebum under control. Most anti dandruff shampoos that are available over the counter contain this chemical.
Selenium sulfide shampoos are another effective way to keep dandruff under control. These shampoos work by slowing down the rate of cell turnover and thereby control the fungal growth. The anti-seborrheic properties as well as cytostatic impact on cells of the scalp is thought to help. It is however important to use these only as directed and to see if they are suitable for colored hair, since these ingredients are known to cause discoloration.
Ketoconazole containing shampoo – some of these shampoos require a medical prescription and contain broad spectrum anti fungal agents. This is an effective antidote to seborrheic dermatitis as well as effective dandruff treatment.
Tar based shampoos can also help treat dandruff. Tar is an effective anti psoriasis treatment and is seen to be as effective for dandruff as it is for the skin condition. Tar based shampoos do have drawbacks such as smell and staining, however they can be effective as they help slow down cell turnover and hence flakiness.
Steroidal formulations are sometimes prescribed in the case of stubborn and hard to control dandruff. Corticosteroids work by preventing the proliferation of dandruff flakes and also controlling inflammation that is connected to this skin condition.
Dandruff is often seen to coexist with other skin conditions. These can offer an indication of the type of dandruff that a person has and consequently what kind of dandruff cure is ideal for them. Often it is found that proper dandruff treatment can cause the skin condition to disappear and vice versa as well.
